Exam Information


EXAM CHANGES  (Posted May 1, 2023)

  • Less time between retakes - Retake exams up to 6 times, 30 days apart, then 120 days thereafter. 
  • Master Plumber and Residential Master Plumbers- To qualify for a Master license classification, you will need to take the new Utah Master Law and Rule exam and pass it with a minimum score of 75%.

Preapproval for testing is not required. Please do not submit an application for licensure until you have successfully passed all required exams and meet all other licensing requirements.

There are four classifications for the Plumber License in Utah: Journeyman, Master, Residential Journeyman and Residential Master. The examinations required for each of the four licensing classifications are as follows:

Journeyman Plumber (JP)

  • Utah Plumber Written Exam
  • Utah Plumber Practical Exam

Master Plumber (MP)

  • Utah Master Plumber Law and Rule Exam
  • Utah Plumber Practical Exam*

*NOTE: Not required if previously passed to obtain a Journeyman license.

Residential Journeyman Plumber (RJP)

  • Utah Residential Plumber Written Exam
  • Utah Plumber Practical Exam

Residential Master Plumber (RMP)

  • Utah Master Plumber Law and Rule Exam
  • Utah Plumber Practical Exam*

*NOTE: Not required if previously passed to obtain a Journeyman or Residential Journeyman license.

To Schedule an Exam:

  • Create an account at https://provexam.com/scheduler/ . You have the option to take this exam at most college and university testing centers in Utah and throughout the US.
  • Out-of-State Testing: Contact Prov directly to make testing arrangements. The phone number is 877-228-3926.
  • At-Home Testing: You also have the option of using an on-line proctoring test platform known as Examroom. To verify your computer equipment will run Examroom, please use this system check tool prior to registering for your exam: On-Line Proctoring System Check

  • Electronic submission of exam results will be sent directly to DOPL from prov.
