Professional Engineering / Professional Land Surveying

Exam Information


NOTE: Preapproval for testing is not required. Please do not submit an application for licensure until you have successfully passed all required exams and meet all other licensing requirements.

There are three licenses available for Engineering and Land Surveying in Utah: Professional Engineer, Professional Structural Engineer, and Professional Land Surveyor. Applicants applying with a current NCEES Council Record are not required to submit exam information as it is contained in the council record. Applicants without a current NCEES Council Record, who passed the FE and PE exams for states other than Utah, must request an official verification of their scores be sent directly to DOPL. The examination requirements for each license classification are listed below:

Professional Engineer

The following exams are administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) .

  • Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE)
  • Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam (PE)

Professional Structural Engineer

The following exams are administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) .

  • Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE); and one of the following:
    • 16 hour Structural Engineering Exam (SE); or
    • Structural I and Structural II Exams; or
    • an equivalent 16-hour state written structural exam; or
    • Structural II Exam and an equivalent 8-hour state written exam

Professional Land Surveyor

  • Fundamentals of Surveying Exam (FS)
  • Principles and Practice of Surveying Exam (PS) administered by NCEES .
  • Utah Professional Land Surveyor Examination

To schedule the Utah Professional Land Surveyor Examination:

  • Create an account at https://provexam.com/scheduler/ .  You have the option to take this exam at most college and university testing centers in Utah and throughout the US.
  • Out-of-State Testing:  Contact Prov directly to make these arrangements.  Their phone number is 877-228-3926.
  • At-Home Testing:  You may also have the option of using an on-line proctoring test platform known as Examroom.  To verify your computer equipment will run Examroom, please use this system check tool prior to registering for your exam: On-Line Proctoring System Check
  • Electronic submission of exam results will be sent directly to DOPL from Prov.
