Building Inspector

Exam Information

There are no licensing exams required for the Building Inspector or Limited Inspector license classifications. However, each classification requires certification which may include an exam requirement. For more information on the requirements for either of these professions, please review the following information:

Combination Inspector (C8)

The International Code Council (ICC) is a national certification program.  Certification as a Combination Inspector will require ALL of the following exams:

  • Commercial Building Inspector (ICC Exam ID: B2)
  • Residential Building Inspector (ICC Exam ID: B1)
  • Commercial Electrical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: E2) *
  • Residential Electrical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: E1) *
  • Commercial Plumbing Inspector (ICC Exam ID: P2)
  • Residential Plumbing Inspector (ICC Exam ID: P1)
  • Commercial Mechanical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: M2)
  • Residential Mechanical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: M1)

    *IAEI — The ICC Residential and Commercial Electrical certifications may be replaced with the following certification exams.  For additional information on these certification exams, please visit International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) at the following link: IAEI Certification

  • Certified Electrical Inspectors - Master (CEI-M)
  • Certified Electrical Inspector – Residential (CEI-R)

Limited Inspector

You may submit certification documentation for one or more of the following national certification programs:

ICC - The International Code Council (ICC) is a national certification program. To sign up for any of the ICC certification exams mentioned below, please visit the International Code Council (ICC) website and search for your exam under the box heading, How to Use the Exam Catalog: ICC Exam Registration

  • Residential Combination Inspector (ICC Exam ID: R5)
  • Commercial Combination (ICC Exam ID: C5)
  • Commercial Building Inspector (ICC Exam ID: B2)
  • Commercial Electrical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: E2)
  • Commercial Plumbing Inspector (ICC Exam ID: P2)
  • Commercial Mechanical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: M2)
  • Residential Building Inspector (ICC Exam ID: B1)
  • Residential Electrical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: E1)
  • Residential Plumbing Inspector (ICC Exam ID: P1)
  • Residential Mechanical Inspector (ICC Exam ID: M1)
  • Any other special or otherwise limited inspector code used by ICC
